Monthly Prayer Devotional

September 2016

by Bimpe Arnold, Newmarket Day Prayer Chair

Frailty of Life.

The early morning of June 17th plays out like a horror show. Every time I look back it seems the event happened to someone else. My husband and I went to bed quite late the previous night. I remember waking up around 5am looking at his side of the bed and noticing he had gone to the bathroom. I thought he would have a little more time to sleep before getting up for work. As I lay in bed thinking about the day ahead of us, I fell back asleep momentarily. I woke up to a loud thud and was convinced George had walked into something in the dark. I turned around to see what happened but found him lying on the floor, unconscious in a pool of blood. I instinctively jumped out of bed and rushed to his side calling his name but got no response. In my hysterical state I dialed 911 and called out to my daughter. Fear overwhelmed me and thoughts of life without him scared me. How would I cope with life as a widow at age 49?

The ride to the hospital was surreal. Prayer didn’t come easily but I knew the ladies I served with would pray. At 5:30 in the morning I called and requested the prayer chain for my husband.

As I waited for test results the verse that came to mind was Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

We are feeble and weak people with fragile lives. The Bible describes our frame in Job 14:1-2: we spring up like a flower and wither away like a fleeting shadow simply here today, gone tomorrow.

We always think we are going to live to a full ripe old age. Work, then retire; enjoy a carefree retirement life then die at an old age when we are ready. What if we go to bed and death comes or we leave home one day and never return due to an accident?

How do I live for Christ now? At the end of each day, if that day was my last, will I say with confidence that I am ready to go? Truthfully, I cannot admit that l am prepared to die when I lay down to sleep. It is time to end my days differently and to end my day by giving an accounting to the Lord.

Salvation is not earned. Matthew 6:20 reminds me to “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal”. With this in mind, how am I making an impact for the Lord?

I have pleasant memories of my father-in-law’s memorial service early on in the year. People shared stories of his love and passion for Jesus. This translated to the way he treated people. He was remembered for his kindness and fervor for prayer. Many testified to his life of care for God’s people because he loved the Lord and lived for Him. I am sure dad was not even aware that he made such an impact on people’s lives here on earth. In heaven I can picture dad meeting many more people that he influenced because of a kind word or act. Dad was such a simple man with a Christ –centered agenda.

The event of June 17th has been life changing. Thankfully my husband is still with us. The choice is mine whether to focus on what could have gone wrong or see it as a blessing. A wake up call for my family and myself to bring the Lord into focus. How am I numbering the days of my life so l can gain a heart of wisdom?
