Monthly Prayer Devotional

December 2015

by Dave Mann, National Director of I.T.

My family and I live in southern Ontario, at the west end of Lake Ontario, in the area known as the Golden Horseshoe. One of our favourite eateries is a little place located on the south shore of the lake. From there, on a clear day, you can see, on the other side of the lake, downtown Toronto, including the CN Tower, a building that once held the title of ‘The tallest free-standing structure in the world.’ From my vantage point on that beach, that tower looks small, insignificant, and unimpressive. Yet, I know if I were in downtown Toronto, standing at the base of that building, my impression would be completely the opposite.

On a visit to the restaurant one day, I was reflecting how that image typifies our spiritual walk. If we are far away from God, He appears small, insignificant, and unimpressive. Yet, the closer we get, the more we come to understand His stature, His awesome power, majesty and holiness.

In doing Daniel this year, we recently covered Daniel’s trip to the lion’s den in chapter 6. In that chapter we see two individuals, one who is close to God, and one far away. On one hand we have Daniel, close to God, devoted, and diligent. He clearly understands God’s power; faithfulness, and justice, and he walks into the lion’s den without fear. On the other hand we have Darius. He looked everywhere that he could think of for a solution to the dilemma he faced. He went down every dead end seeking an answer, but found none. Finally, after exhausting all human wisdom, and human power, he hands the problem over to God with some uncertainty.

I’m sad to say that I am probably more often like Darius than I am like Daniel, in this respect. We tend to explore all our options, and then, when all else fails, hand the unsolvable over to God, without really much hope left.

I think, from looking at Daniel’s life, I realize that to go from being a Darius to being a Daniel is not something you do at ‘that moment.’ When that moment comes, it is too late. To grab hold of God, we need to be close by Him.

If I was to get in a boat and head out from my location on the lake shore, with the desire to head towards that downtown skyline, I won’t get there without intentional action. Doing nothing is not an option. ‘Nothing’ just leaves me subject to the wind and the waves. I need to be at the helm, checking my course constantly, and correcting for the opposing action of the wind and the waves that would move the boat off course.

In the same way, we may have a desire to know God, but we need to be intentional. We need to prepare for ‘that moment’ by being in the Word, and being in prayer every day. Doing ‘nothing’ is not an option. We need to be checking our course constantly, correcting for the actions of opposing forces on us. That is the only way to get close to God, where we are in a position to truly see and appreciate His awesome power, majesty and holiness.

Proverb 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
